UK scenes across all four seasons

One of my favorite parts of life in the UK is living in a place with distinct seasons. Luckily, the weather is fairly mild year-round, but each season definitely brings its own set of benefits and challenges.

UK Weather by Season: What to Expect Year-Round

While the UK is known as a rainy place, it’s not all doom and gloom. Weather is pretty mild year-round, and each season offers a different experience, from spring blooms to cosy winter markets.

Spring in the UK (March–May)

Spring is lovely, and widely considered one of the best times to visit the UK, thanks to mild temperatures (8–15°C / 46–59°F) and blooming landscapes. Expect a mix of sunshine, light rain, and longer daylight hours as the season progresses. Clocks change in late March, ushering in much longer days.

Summer in the UK (June–August)

Summer brings the warmest weather and longest days, with average temperatures of 18–25°C (64–77°F). This is peak travel season in the UK, ideal for sightseeing, festivals, and coastal destinations. UK schools are typically in session until late July, making early summer travel your best bet for less crowding.

Autumn in the UK (September–November)

Autumn is a fantastic shoulder season, offering fewer crowds and beautiful fall foliage. It’s also one of the times when the UK feels most like the vision you see in pictures. Temperatures range from 10–18°C (50–64°F) early in the season, cooling steadily with more frequent rain. Bring your raincoat and enjoy the autumnal atmosphere.

Winter in the UK (December–February)

Winter in the UK is generally mild, with temperatures between 2–8°C (36–46°F). While snow is possible, especially in northern areas, most of the country experiences cool, damp weather and shorter daylight hours. Christmas is a huge holiday here, and the combination of festive lights and markets help stave off the early dark. Early in the year is also the best time to visit with low crowds and price discounts.
