Autumn Weather in London
For most of the Fall season, you can expect temperatures ranging from 8°C to 15°C (46°F to 59°F), with occasional drizzle and breezy days. Layers are your best friend, and shoes should be both stylish and waterproof.
It is always a good idea to check the forecast before you travel. In 2023, the Met Office recorded the hottest day of the year in early September. I actually find September to be one of the best months of the year to visit London since schools are back in session but the weather is often still mild to warm.

October and November are more reliable for cool weather. By late October it often starts to feel more like winter, especially with the time shift bringing your daily sunset to just before 5pm. The whole country combats the darkness by shifting immediately into holiday season at the start of November.

Dressing Like a Local in London
One of my favorite things about London is how tolerant the city is of pretty much everything. There is no single look for Londoners – feel free to bring your whole personality here.
Some of the common fashion choices I see in the fall are statement coats, faux leather sneakers, and ankle-length jeans (the better to avoid rain puddles with).
What to Wear in London in the Fall by Activity
There’s a lot to do in London, from historic sights to West End shows. Here is what I’d recommend wearing for each stop on your itinerary.
Sightseeing & Museums Outfit
Every sightseeing day in London comes with a lot of steps. This is true whether you’re browsing the Tate Modern or stepping back in time at the Tower of London. It’s important to balance fashion with comfort so you can enjoy your day out.

Outfit Idea:
- Straight-leg jeans or trousers
- Short-sleeve tee (long-sleeve for cold November days)
- Layering sweater
- Lightweight trench or oversized blazer
- Comfortable ankle boots or fashion sneakers
- Crossbody bag or small backpack
- Statement scarf and optional beanie hat
Packing Tip: All of these pieces mix in with your travel essentials and can layer up or down for different weather days.
West End Show or Dinner Out
You don’t need to bring your fanciest dress to enjoy a night at the theatre or a stylish dinner in Soho. Theatres in London welcome guests in casual sightseeing outfits and evening attire alike without batting an eye. Here’s an elevated outfit idea that will still fit in with the rest of your travel wardrobe.

Outfit Idea:
- Midi dress
- Tights (optional, depending on temps)
- Ankle boots or sleek flats
- Waterproof trench or wool coat
- Small clutch or slim crossbody
- Gold or bold earrings to dress it up
Packing Tip: Opt for a wrinkle-resistant dress that you can wear sightseeing with trainers or comfortable boots and elevate at night with slim flats and accessories.
Pubs & Casual Evenings
You can’t come to London and not stop into a pub. One of my favorites in the city is the Old Bank of England pub on Fleet Street. The interiors are bright and vintage, perfect for a cozy autumn night. Whichever pub you choose, this is a good night for a cute and casual outfit.

Outfit Idea:
- Dark skinny or straight jeans
- Chunky knit sweater or Breton style top
- Chelsea boots
- Wool coat or padded jacket
- Optional: a cute beanie if it’s a chilly night
Packing Tip: You can absolutely let your daytime sightseeing outfit double for pub nights. If you want to dress it up, add on some layered jewelry and swap your day bag for a smaller crossbody.
Day Trips from London
If you’re heading out on a day trip to another city like Oxford, you can stick to the same sightseeing formula you’d use for London. For autumn countryside visits, you’ll want comfort and warmth. This outfit is for country walks or visits to outdoorsy sights where shifts in the weather could catch you out.

Outfit Idea:
- Layered top and sweater
- Comfortable walking trousers or leggings
- Waterproof boots or trainers
- Hooded rainproof jacket
- Daypack or tote
Packing Tip: Fall weather in the UK is very often damp. The later you visit in the season, the more likely you’ll need actual waterproof boots instead of trainers you don’t mind getting mucky.
Rainy Day Wandering
Odds are, you’ll get a rainy day or two in London. Don’t worry—you can still look great while staying dry.

Outfit Idea:
- Water-resistant hooded trench or raincoat
- Knit or long-sleeve top
- Ankle length black trousers or dark jeans
- Chelsea boots
- Umbrella
- Optional: a bright scarf for a pop of color against the gloomy skies
Packing Tip: A foldable raincoat and compact travel umbrella are your best friends on a fall visit to London.
Mix & Match Without Overpacking
It can be hard to stay stylish while traveling, but it’s not impossible. Build your capsule with a color palette in mind. I find it easiest to pick a neutral, like black or camel, and then build in pops of color with sweaters or accessories. This is an absolute minimum packing list for a week in London.
- 3 base layer tops
- 2 bottoms
- 2-3 layering pieces (sweaters, cardigan or blazer)
- 1 dress
- 1 rainproof coat
- 2 pairs of shoes
- 1-2 scarves
- A few bold accessories
Everything should mix together for easy outfit rotation. You’ll get 7+ different looks from just 10-14 pieces.
Final Tips for Autumn Style in London
- Layers are your friend. Mornings can be cold, but you might warm up inside galleries or cafes.
- Choose packable fabrics. Merino wool, jersey, and knit blends work well to blend warmth with easy folding.
- Embrace your style. London fashion is eclectic and expressive. It’s hard to stick out negatively because pretty much anything goes.
