Travel Planning
This is how I plan trips to and around the UK:
Flights to the UK
I use Skyscanner to find the best routes and prices for my trips back home or when I’m helping friends plan their trips to the UK. Set a price alert for your dates to ensure you get the best rate for your flight!
Train Travel in the UK
Trainline is my absolute go-to, whether I’m booking for a day trip into London or crossing the country. Check times and compare prices across all train companies at once. Digital tickets are available for most trips.
Wondering whether a Railcard is worth it for your trip? If you plan on traveling between cities or regions, then they can be a great travel hack because the savings quickly outweigh the cost.
Railcards discount train travel by 1/3 for a year on National Rail trips. Take the Trainline quiz to find out which Railcard works best for you.
Driving in the UK
I recommend and use Discover Cars to find the best rental car rates and convenient pick up points for rental cars in the UK. They also offer competitive rates on rental insurance to keep you covered in case driving on the left gets the better of you.
Nervous about driving on the left? Learn to drive like a local before you set off with Tripiamo Guides. These comprehensive videos will boost your confidence and teach you the rules of the UK road in about an hour.
Guided Tours in the UK
GetYourGuide and Viator are both really helpful for gathering guided tour options for your location. I’ve used them to find tours in London, Edinburgh, and across Europe. Visiting with a local guide is the best way to really see a place and make sure you don’t miss out on interesting details.
Places to Stay in the UK
Booking.com makes it easy to find well-reviewed stays across the UK, Europe, and beyond. I’ve used them to book hotels and family apartments and have never had a bad experience. As with any lodging booking, look for places that are well established with good reviews.

Phone Data in the UK
We all rely on our phones when we travel. Make sure you can access your maps and send messages to your companions by purchasing an Airalo e-sim for your trip.
Sounds techy, but you simply download the e-sim for your travel destination and get access to data without horrendous roaming charges. Airalo offers full data coverage in the UK and across Europe.
Luggage Storage in the UK
Make the most of your travel days with safe and convenient luggage storage. I’ve used Radical Storage to safely store my luggage near my departure train station instead of wasting time going back to my hotel.
Radical Storage partners with local shops and other businesses that have secure storage space. Find the location most convenient for your plans and save your time for sightseeing.
Travel Insurance for UK Visits
Picking up travel insurance before your trip can buy a lot of mental peace for not a lot of money. For example, you can get coverage for:
- Medical fees
- Lost or stolen belongings
- Trip cancellation or interruption
Compare insurance prices and coverage easily with Visitors Coverage. I have used them for my own travels and find the platform easy to use for good coverage at a cheap price – even when I visit the US.
What to Pack by Season
Bring just what you need to cope with UK weather and be ready to make the most of your trip!
Travel Gear
My favorite travel gear for the UK and beyond:
- Lightweight and durable
- Four double spinner wheels
- Integrated 3-dial TSA approved combination lock
- Large front pocket with padded laptop sleeve
- Keeps clothing organized
- Separate out worn items from clean clothes
- Compression packing to maximize space
